While intentions matter in spellcraft, physical materials are important to reaching your magical goals. I fully endorse supporting local witchcraft stores when you can, but sometimes the Dollar Tree (more so the “$1.25 tree” at the time of this writing) is the most convenient and money saving option especially if you live in a rural area where craft specific shops are limited. The supplies can be used for individual spells and offerings or form the basics for you whole sabbat like I did for Ostara this year. Below are some of my favorite items to grab at the Dollar Tree, and I hope they inspire you in your next trip.
Candles
Dollar Tree is full of many shapes and colors of candles throughout the year, making it a great place to start for most occasions. For the year round candle section, you can find novenas in many different colors and sometimes featuring Catholic saints to incorporate into the calls for your spellwork. While they don’t burn a full nine days, they work fine especially if you’re like me and extinguish candles while sleeping for safety. Tea lights are also readily available by the bag full and make great regular offering candles or for when you’re running low on time.
Keep an eye out also for specific seasonal candles. I’ve been able to find throughout the years candles in the shapes of pumpkins, leaves or with honeycomb patterns. These are good to purchase when you see them and store for future sabbats. For example, whenever I see rainbow candles, I store them back from celebration during pride month and blessing my home during the month of June or to use as prayer candles whenever particularly hateful anti-LGBTQ legislation passes.
Containers
For every season, Dollar Tree sells different candle holders and glass containers which make great altar pieces. I’ve been stars and hearts frequently throughout the year along with basic cylinders to hold candles in. Vases are also readily available.
You can easily sit out potpourri in them as part of decoration for your celebration or as a devotional offering. The store also sells sand and shells which can easily be placed for decorations for Venus or other ocean deities and spirits. And with a wide fake flower selection, you can look up the magical correspondences for each flower and incorporate that into your spell or sabbat.
Pillow Cases and Table Placemats
These vary more depending on your particular store, but I’ve often seen small pillow cases or table place settings at the Dollar Tree. While not intuitive, I’ve frequently been able to repurpose these items to be altar clothes for small surfaces such as nightstands or in nooks in bookshelves. Pieces of felt can also be used for a similar purpose and marked up with paint markers for sigils or specific god or goddess’ symbols.
Dishware and Glasses
Especially if you’re just getting started, it can be a challenging to figure out what to use to place offerings on your altar. You can find a cheap wide range of materials at the Dollar Tree for offering plates, bowls and glasses that you can dedicate to your craft collection. Depending on the season, they may already come perfectly decorated for your intention but you can also make use of the acrylic paints to decorate with specific symbols, motifs or sigils to infuse your intention.
Herbs and Salts
Books upon books have been written on the spell correspondences of various herbs and spices. Selection can vary widely based on the store you’re at but I’ve consistently seen salt and more common herbs like basil and cinnamon. I recommended taking any given herb and typing “[herb name] witchcraft” into a search engine. You’ll be surprised at how many diverse witchy uses there are for each item in the spice section from protection with salt to crafting spells for finance and love. Don’t forget to check the tea section also for magical ingredients such as chamomile.
Depending on the season, you may also find seeds in store to grow your own plants and flowers. This can be great with fostering a relationship from seed to adult plant. You can get full materials from pots to dehydrated soil to start your gardening journey in store.
I hope this list and details give you some inspiration for your next Dollar Tree trip. Witchcraft can seem very expensive on the surface but remember that many magical correspondences came from the folk magic of our ancestors using what they had on hand, not fancy ingredients that made no sense to their locale.
